Pyramids are triangular
masonry structure by early Egyptian population and one of the unique Seven
Wonders of the Ancient World. The masterpiece structures were used as tomb to
bury the elite people of the country especially the Kings (commonly known as
Pharaohs in Egypt) to get an eternal life following their death. They also
provided valuable jewels with the Kings to live a better life after the death,
while there was a huge chance for the jewels being stolen. Therefore, they also
made some deceptive chambers to lead the thieves a wrong direction. There are too
many ambiguities and schools circling pyramid, while building without any
modern construction equipment is one of them. The article deals with the issue
of pyramid construction on that ancient time.
Pyramids are one
of the unique Seven Wonders of the Earth. Those were built around 4500 years back.
The largest pyramid on the earth located under the dazzling sun in the desert
near Cairo, is really one of the most stunning structures around the globe
since it was made without the help of any modern technology and tools. The largest
pyramid stands around 450 feet and made of over two million rock blocks, while
each of the blocks ranged from 2.5 tons to 50 tons in weight, thus the total weight
of the edifice is six million tons! Besides, there are four corners with
perfect angles aligned exactly with the compass points. Though the structures are
striking, the construction method is still unknown to us and has created many unresolved
issues, hence there are many hypotheses over the pyramid construction.
Some say it was
built by Aliens, as they believe it is not possible for human to assemble the
stones together in such a height, while some other schools refuse the theory.
There is a lot of controversy over the issue, but it has been historically and
scientifically proved that the pyramids were made by men.
Since Egypt is
considered as the state of stone, most of the pyramids were constructed of stony
materials like rough stones, both low and high grade limestone, white stone
(the precious lime stones are termed so), granite, basalt and mudbricks-a very common
building object of Egypt. At the
beginning level of pyramid construction, solid stones were used to build
Pyramids from top to bottom. Later lime stones were placed in the outer casing
to form the shape and other solid rocks for inside. And all the rocks were
collected from the quarries across the western and eastern deserts.
Pitting the stones
from quarries, the builders faced the problems of levelling the stones which were
roughly cut and hitched them to set the stones up at their right position. They
possibly used a number of simple tools like chisels, hammers, pick axes and
other handmade tools since the modern tools like digging buckets, mud buckets,
truck dumpers etc. were unavailable.
A great deal of
manual labour was necessary to carry the stones to the construction point. According to some studies, they probably used
the rolling stone method by rope pulled sledges with a bunch of men to shift
the stone blocks to the under construction Pyramid from the quarries. And the
process might have slowed down when they had to deal with a larger stone blocks.
Stacking up the
blocks and set them in the proper point was the other problems felt by the
builders. They had to make curve ramps centring the Pyramid by which they used
to haul the stones into their desired positions. They increased the height and
length of the ramps after completing one layer, and the ramp shape also turned as
complex following the Pyramid structure. During their work back to the downside
of the pyramid, they removed the ramps. This is the simple mystery of stone
lifting from the ground.
Placing the top
stone and the inner drawings for the burial chamber of the Pyramid was also tough
and dangerous tasks. Blocks worth around 50 ton of solid granite were used to
protect the central burial chamber, which was pulled by a gang of workmen with
ropes after a colossal effort and the process needed other blocks to set the top
blocks into the right position.
The mystery of deciding
directions or to choose the right slope angle to align with the points of a
compass is a very simple one. As most of the Egyptians were mathematicians and
astrologers, it was not a big deal for them to undergo the process. By the rise
and setting of stars, they easily pointed out the perfect directions.
Here I wrap up
the brief tale of pyramid construction. Basically Egyptians made pyramids as
the tomb of Pharaohs (they addressed the Kings as Pharaohs). They believed burying
in Pyramid will take the Kings to the kingdom of immortality, where they will live
forever after death. But whatever their purpose was, the construction of
pyramid has brought a global recognition for their artistic skills.
Historically it
is proved that pyramid was built by men without using any advanced technology, rather
by using brains. There is no doubt about the events like ramp building, stone
sledging, stone cutting with simple tools. The hypothesis of Alien has been
proved forged. Edifices found still today indicate that it was completely
structured by men, though it consumed a lot of time to be done decently.
The excavation sites
for the Pyramids discovered in the present century exhibits the absence of
machinery and the sign of advanced technology. Further, some Egyptologists
suggest that it took around 80 years of over 30000 skilled and semi-skilled workmen
to construct the largest pyramid.
Now-a-days we
also long for constructing such earthshaking structures, but fortunately it
will not consume a long time to make the dream come true. We cannot stop
laughing thinking to use sledges or ramps to build such structures. Instead we
can use modern excavating or fabricating or screening equipments to get the job
done—very easily. There are many specialised engineering agencies around us to
help. We have to look for them to place our demand, and they will conclude the remaining.
